To Vasilis milk is not pleasing. He does not like it at all.
(Actually) to be accurate, it disgusts him.
Παρ’ όλα αυτά, η μητέρα του επιμένει κάθε πρωί μαζί με το κρουασάν να ετοιμάζει και μια τεράστια κούπα γάλα.
Despite all that, his mother insists every morning, with his croissant, on preparing an enormous cup of milk.
Βασίλης παραπονιέται, της λέει ότι δεν του αρέσει, αλλά αυτή επιμένει.
Vasili complains, he tells her that he does not like milk, but she insists.
Το γάλα κάνει καλό του απαντάει και δεν ακούει δεύτερη κουβέντα.
Milk is good for you she answers and does not listen to a second discussion.
Τι θα κάνει ο καημένος;
What will the poor thing do?
Τη μια το έπινε με κλειστή μύτη και την άλλη με κλειστά ματιά, έλεγε στον εαυτό του ότι αυτό που πίνει είναι ένα ωραίο παγωμένο αναψυκτικό και όχι γάλα, αλλά μάταιος κόπος.
The first he drinks with his nose closed and the other with his eyed closed, he says to himself that that which he is drinking is a lovely cold soft drink (refreshment), but in vain …
Όταν κάποτε πήραν στο σπίτι μια γάτα, τη Ρόζα, άδειαζε την κούπα του μέσα στο πιατάκι της κι εκείνη ρουφούσε όλο το γάλα στο λεπτό!
Κι ήταν όλα μια χαρά!
When once he took a cat, Roza, into the house, he emptied his cup into her saucer and she sipped up all the milk in a moment.
And everything was fine.
Μια μέρα, όμως, η μαμά ανακάλυψε τι έκανε και των μάλωσε.
Και άρχισε και τα ίδια.
One day, though, his mum discovered what he had done and scolded him. And the same things started again.
Δεν άργησε, βέβαια, ο Βασίλης, να βρει άλλο κόλπο: το άδειαζε όλο στο νεροχύτη της κουζίνας. Κι όλα ωραία και καλά!
He did not delay, of course, Vasilis to find another ploy, he emptied it all in the kitchen sink. And all was lovely and well.
Έλα όμως που η μαμά τον τσάκωσε και πάλι, και τον μάλωσε ακόμα πιο πολύ.
Κι έτσι άρχισαν τα ίδια …
Come, but his mum caught him again and scolded him even more.
And so the same things started …
Άσε που δεν έφευγε στιγμή από κοντά του αν δεν τον έβλεπε να το πίνει όλο, μέχρι την τελευταία σταγόνα.
She would not leave him for a moment until she had seen him drink it all until the last drop.
Οπότε καταλαβαίνετε ότι η ζωή του ήταν πια σκέτο μαρτύριο!
Whereupon he understood that his life was a plain misery.
Η μαμά του τον συμβούλευε ότι το γάλα έχει ασβέστιο που μας χαρίζει δύναμη, γερά κόκαλα, γερά δόντια και αστραφτερό χαμόγελο, όπως, έχουν αυτοί που διαφημίζουν οδοντόκρεμες στην τηλεόραση!
His mother explains the milk has calcium which gives us strength, strong bones, strong teeth and sparkling smile, like those which are advertised on toothpaste on television.
Τα βράδια άρχισε να έχει εφιάλτες. Τη μια έβλεπε ότι ήταν καλοκαίρι και ξαφνικά άρχισε να βρέχει με το τουλούμι. Αλλά αντί για νερό έβρεχε γάλα!

His clothes and his hair were soaking and they became a duck and the place flooded and he was all alone. But no one came to help him.
Και αυτά ήταν πελαγωμένος και δεν ήξερε τι να κάνει.
And he was confused and didn’t know what to do.
Την άλλη έβλεπε ότι είχε πέσει σε μια τεράστια κούπα με γάλα και αγωνιζόταν να βγει, αλλά δεν τα κατάφερνε και κινδύνευε να πνιγεί.
In another, he saw that he had fallen into an enormous cup of milk and struggled to get out, but he could not manage and he was in danger of drowning.
Μια φορά, ο εφιάλτης με την κούπα ήταν τόσο έντονος, που ξύπνησε με φωνές κι έτρεξε αμέσως η μαμά στο δωμάτιό του για τον ηρεμήσει.
One time the nightmare with the cup was so vivid that he awoke shouting and his mum ran immediately to calm him.
Έπειτα από μερικές μέρες πήγαν με τη μαμά στον οδοντογιατρό. Ο γιατρός του έκανε ένα σφράγισμα – ευτυχώς δεν πόνεσε – του έκανε και μερικές ερωτήσεις, και ύστερα του ζήτησε να βγει για λίγο έξω για να συζητήσει με την μητέρα του.
After a few days he went with his mum to the dentist. The dentist made him a filling – fortunately it did not hurt – he also asked him some questions, and later he (the dentist) asked him to go outside for a bit in order for him (dentist) to discuss with his mother.
Ο Βασίλης κάθισε στην αίθουσα αναμονής και περίμενε. Εκεί είχε κάτι ωραία βιβλία με ζωγραφιές αλλά δεν του έκανε όρεξη να τα ξεφυλλίσει.
Vasilis sat in the waiting room and waited. There they had such lovely books with pictures, but he had no appetite to leaf through them.
Η καρδιά του χτυπούσε από αγωνία. Γιατί του είπε ο γιατρός να βγει έξω; Τι κουβέντιαζε με τη μαμά του; Τι θα του έλεγαν;
His heart beat with agony. Why did the dentist ask him to wait outside? What did he discuss with his mum? What would they say to him?
Όταν μάλιστα είδε στον τοίχο μια αφίσα που έδειχνε ένα παιδί με ένα μεγάλο ποτήρι γάλα, τότε ανησύχησε ακόμη πιο πολύ.
When of course he saw on the wall a poster which showed a child with a large cup of milk in her hand then he worried even more.
Όχι, λες να μου πει ο γιατρός να πίνω περισσότερο γάλα; αναρωτήθηκε από μέσα του.
No, are you telling me that the doctor will tell me to drink more milk? he wondered to himself (from within himself).
Κάποια στιγμή ο δοντογιατρός τον φώναξε μέσα και όλο σοβαρότητα τον ρώτησε αν του αρέσει το τυρί, το γιαούρτι, το σπιτικό παγωτό, οι τυρόπιτες, το βούτυρο.
At that moment the dentist called him in and in all seriousness asked him if he liked cheese, yogurt, homemade ice cream, cheese pie and butter.
Ναι, όλα του άρεσαν. Αλλά γιατί τον ρωτούσε;
Yes, all these things he likes. But why did he ask him.
<<Ωραία>>, είπε ο γιατρός, <<από αύριο το ασβέστιο θα το παίρνεις από τις τροφές που αναφέραμε. Κι έτσι δεν χρειάζεται να πίνεις πια γάλα>>.
“Lovely”, said the dentist, “from tomorrow you will get your calcium from the foods we have mentioned. And so, you don’t need to drink milk”.
Τι! Δεν πίστευε στ’ αυτιά του! Κοίταξε τη μαμά του χαμογέλασε. Και στην στιγμή ο Βασίλης άρχισε να χοροπηδάει και φωνάζει ενθουσιασμένος:
What! He didn’t believe his ears! He looked at his mum and smiled. And at that moment started to bounce and shout enthusiastically:
